According to Luther's Devil legend, in the winter of 1521-1522, while Martin Luther was in his cabinet at the Wartburg Castle translating the Bible into German, The Devil came to distract him from his task.  When Luther heard The Devil's scrubbing and rasping, he grabbed an ink bottle and threw it at The Devil to chase it away.
